ANTIMICOBIALS, ANTIINFECTIVE

Amoxicillin (Amoxil ® )
Semisynthetic analog of ampicillin

Indicated in the treatment of infections due to susceptible (ONLY β-lactamase-negative) strains of the designated microorganisms in the conditions listed below:

  • Ear, nose, and throat infection due to Streptococcus spp. (α- and β-hemolytic strains only), Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus spp., or Haemophilus influenzae.
    Mild to moderate infection:
         500 mg every 12 hours OR 250 mg every 8 hours
    Severe infection:
         875 mg every 12 hours OR 500 mg every 8 hours

  • Lower respiratory tract infection due to Streptococcus spp. (α- and β-hemolytic strains only), Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus spp., or H. influenzae
    Mild , moderate, or severe infection:
         875 mg every 12 hours OR 500 mg every 8 hours

  • Skin or skin structure infection due to Streptococcus spp. (α- and β-hemolytic strains only), Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus spp., or Haemophilus influenzae.
    Mild to moderate infection:
         500 mg every 12 hours OR 250 mg every 8 hours
    Severe infection:
         875 mg every 12 hours OR 500 mg every 8 hours

  • Genitourinary tract infection due to Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, or Enterococcus faecalis
    Mild to moderate infection:
         500 mg every 12 hours OR 250 mg every 8 hours
    Severe infection:
         875 mg every 12 hours OR 500 mg every 8 hours

  • Gonorrhea, acute uncomplicated (ano-genital and urethral infections) due to N. gonorrhoeae (males and females)
         3 grams as asingle oral dose

  • Helicobacter pylori eradication to reduce the risk of duodenal ulcer recurrence
    Triple therapy: Amoxil/clarithromycin/lansoprazole
         1 gram Amoxil, 500 mg clarithromycin, and 30 mg lansoprazole, all given twice daily (q12h) for 14 days.

    Dual therapy: Amoxil/lansoprazole
         1 gram Amoxil (amoxicillin) and 30 mg lansoprazole, each given three times daily (q8h) for 14 days.
  • Endocarditis prophylaxis for dental, oral, respiratory tract, or esophageal procedures in adult:
         2.0 g given orally one hour before procedure

Patients severely impaired renal function (glomerular filtration rate of <30 mL/minute) should not receive the 875-mg tablet.
Amoxil chewable tablets contain phenylalanine and should not be used by phenylketonurics.

 Azithromycin (Zithromax ®)
Azithromycin is an azalide antibiotic related to erythromycin
 

  • Acute bacterial exacerbations of COPD  due to Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis or Streptoccocus pneumoniae:
         500 mg daily X 3 days OR 500 mg as a single dose on Day 1, followed by 250 mg once daily on Days 2 through 5.
     
  • Acute bacterial sinusitis  due to Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis orStreptoccocus pneumoniae:
         500 mg daily X 3 days
     
  • Community-acquired pneumonia due to Chlamydia pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae or Streptoccocus pneumoniae in patients approprite for oral therapy:
        500 mg single dose on Day 1, followed by 250 mg once daily Days 2 through 5.
     
  • Pharyngitis/tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes as an alternative to penicillin:
        500 mg single dose on Day 1, followed by 250 mg once daily Days 2 through 5.
  • Uncomplicated skin infections due to Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, or Streptococcus agalactiae:
         500 mg single dose on Day 1, followed by 250 mg once daily Days 2 through 5.
     
  • Urethritis or cervicitis due to Chlamydia trachomatis or Neisseria gonorrhea:
         One single 1 gram dose.
